Morocco Releases Journalist Ali Lmrabet Amid Press Freedom Concerns

Prominent Moroccan journalist and government critic Ali Lmrabet has been released from police custody three days after his arrest on defamation allegations.

The 66-year-old journalist was detained at Tangier airport after returning from Spain, where he has lived for years. Media rights groups, including Reporters Without Borders and the Committee to Protect Journalists, called for his release.

Lmrabet said after his release that he only practices independent journalism and does not engage in politics. Authorities said an investigation into alleged defamatory remarks against individuals and institutions remains open.

Lmrabet has a long history of clashes with Moroccan authorities. His previous publications were banned, and he faced legal action over articles and comments involving the monarchy and Western Sahara.

The case comes as activists raise concerns over growing pressure on critics, following the arrest of rapper and filmmaker Mehdi El Youbi, who supporters say was targeted over his political lyrics and online posts.
