Nicaragua Cuts Diplomatic Ties With Italy Over Aldo Moro Murder Case
Nicaragua has severed diplomatic relations with Italy following a dispute over its refusal to extradite Alessio Casimirri, a former member of the Red Brigades convicted in the 1978 kidnapping and murder of former Italian Prime Minister Aldo Moro.
Nicaragua’s Foreign Ministry said the decision was made after comments by Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, who criticised Managua for protecting Casimirri, calling him a convicted terrorist.
Moro was abducted by the Red Brigades in March 1978 and later found dead in Rome after negotiations for his release failed. Casimirri has lived in Nicaragua for decades and was granted citizenship, preventing his extradition under Nicaraguan law.
Italy said it would continue seeking Casimirri’s extradition and wants him to face the Italian justice system.
