US Deportations to Central African Republic Include Afghan Protected From Taliban Persecution
The United States has deported dozens of people to the Central African Republic, including a young Afghan man who had previously received court protection from deportation to Afghanistan because of fears of Taliban persecution.
According to his lawyer, the man’s family in Afghanistan faced threats because his brothers had supported US forces. One brother served in the former Afghan National Army, while another US-trained pilot was later killed by the Taliban.
The deportation flight arrived in Bangui on Saturday and reportedly included 12 Afghans and eight Iranians, along with deportees from Nepal and Nicaragua.
The case has raised concerns among immigration and human rights advocates over the treatment of people who may face serious risks if returned to countries where they could be persecuted.
