US Imposes 25% Tariffs on Brazilian Imports Under Section 301

The United States has announced new 25% tariffs on thousands of Brazilian imports, including sugar, apparel, paper and steel, under Section 301 of US trade law. The duties are scheduled to take effect on July 22.

The measures follow a year-long US investigation that accused Brazil of unfair trade practices involving digital trade and environmental policies. US officials said negotiations had failed to resolve the disputes.

Several products, including beef, coffee, rare-earth materials, aircraft parts and selected oil and gas products, have been exempted from the tariffs to reduce pressure on US consumers and key industries.

Brazil has rejected the allegations, with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's government calling them politically motivated. Brazilian officials said they remain open to negotiations but criticized Washington's demands as one-sided.

The tariffs are the first introduced under Section 301 since the US Supreme Court limited the administration's broader tariff powers earlier this year.
