The US military’s estimated cost of the war with Iran has risen above $47 billion, according to Pentagon data obtained by Reuters. The estimate is more than 25 percent higher than the figure the Defence Department gave in July.
The latest total covers operational costs, including activities such as flight operations and cyber support. It also projects that more than $29 billion will be needed to replace munitions used during the conflict. More than $6 billion may be required to replace military equipment and other losses, including aircraft and drones.
The Pentagon’s estimate had not been made public, and the department did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The figures also do not clearly include the substantial cost of repairing US bases damaged by Iranian missile and drone attacks.
The latest estimate exceeds Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth’s July figure of $37.5 billion. It is a military-cost estimate, not a full accounting of broader economic effects such as higher energy costs.
