Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says the recent war with the United States and Israel has changed the region and that the Strait of Hormuz will not be managed as it was before.
Speaking at the Foreign Ministry on Sunday, Araghchi said shipping routes through the strategic waterway would face new realities. He did not set out a detailed proposal for how passage should be governed, but said Tehran would welcome a regional security plan developed by countries in the region.
Dispute over the strategic waterway
Iran and the United States remain at odds over control and access through Hormuz, a vital route for global energy shipments. Tehran asserts a role in managing passage, while Washington has demanded unrestricted navigation.
The disagreement follows the US-Israeli war with Iran that began in February. An interim agreement was signed in June, but negotiations have since stalled amid renewed tension.
Araghchi’s comments signal that Iran intends to press for changes to the post-war security arrangements. The statement did not clarify what rules Tehran wants applied or how other coastal states and international shipping would be included in any regional plan.
