Dozens of Israeli Air Force fighter jets flew on a long-range sortie as far as the Iranian border, according to accounts cited by Israeli and US officials. The exercise took place on Monday and was reported as a demonstration of Israel’s ability to operate at a distance from its territory.

The flight reportedly involved refuelling aircraft and covered more than 800 miles. US officials said Iranian air-defence systems would have detected the sortie. The reports did not describe an attack on Iran or confirm that a strike was planned.

Middle East Eye characterised the exercise as an attempt to provoke a response from Tehran. Separately, Axios, citing Israeli and US officials, described it as a show of force or “power projection”. No public statement from the Israeli military has established that provoking an Iranian attack was the operation’s objective.

The reported flight came amid heightened tensions between Israel and Iran and renewed discussion of possible military action. Its timing and range may have been intended to signal operational capability, but the available public accounts do not settle the question of intent. Iran had not publicly announced a response to the exercise at the time of reporting.
